GAMM –
International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics.
About GAMM
GAMM defines itself as an interdisciplinary network for researchers from applied mathematics and mechanics as well as their sub- and neighboring fields. It was founded by Ludwig Prandtl and Richard von Mises in 1922. GAMM played a significant role in advancing hydro- and aerodynamics, solid mechanics, and numerical and industrial mathematics.
The GAMM annual convention, at which up to 1,200 participants meet up for a joint exchange of ideas, is complemented by direct interdisciplinary cooperation, which primarily takes place in expert committees. The promotion of early career researchers is at the heart of GAMM.
By establishing temporary expert committees on current and future-oriented issues in applied mathematics and mechanics, GAMM promotes the scientific exchange among GAMM members and contributes significantly to the (further) development of these topics in Germany and beyond. The expert committees organize their own workshops, participate in the organization of major national and international conferences, initiate major research projects including outside GAMM, and develop statements on specific problems from the perspective of the respective expert committee.
Early career researchers are specifically involved in the work of the expert committees in order to support them in their professional work and to promote the development of a scientific network. In addition, GAMM has introduced three main instruments for the promotion of early career scientists:
- GAMM Juniors, a group of 30 selected young researchers in the field of applied mathematics and mechanics. Ten early career academics are appointed as GAMM Juniors each year for a period of three years in recognition of their scientific achievements. The group of GAMM Juniors organizes itself and meets twice a year in order to network with each other, exchange scientific knowledge, and develop and advance projects. The GAMM Juniors publish the online journal GAMMAS by and for students specializing in applied mathematics and mechanics. In addition, they have initiated well-established event formats such as
- the SAMM (GAMM Juniors’ Summer School on Applied Mathematics and Mechanics),
- the YAMM Lunch (Young Academics Meet Mentors) at the GAMM Annual Meeting,
- the GAMM Juniors’ Poster Session at the GAMM Annual Meeting,
- the Pre-GAMM before the GAMM Annual Meeting, consisting of a scientific part as an onboarding event with introductory talks to the keynote lectures and a soft skills course.
- GAMM Early Career Groups, which promote interdisciplinary collaboration in applied mathematics, mechanics, and other disciplines represented in GAMM between master’s students and doctoral students at local universities.
- Awards to honor outstanding scientific achievements by early career researchers. GAMM has awarded the Richard von Mises Prize for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of applied mathematics and mechanics every year since 1989. The Klaus Körper Prize is awarded each year to up to 4 young researchers who have submitted an outstanding dissertation in the field of applied mathematics and mechanics.
Further GAMM activities:
- Editor of the GAMM newsletter, GAMM bulletin, the Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (ZAMM), the Proceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (PAMM), and the Lecture Notes in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (LAMM).
- Representation of interests at national, European and international organizations by being member of numerous international organizations.
- Exercising the right to nominate candidates for DFG Review Board elections if the DFG Senate approves the corresponding application.
Being a nonprofit association, GAMM does not pursue any economic interests.
