Regulation for GAMM Early-Career Research Groups

1. Establishment

A GAMM early-career research group can be established upon application by at least 8 master and doctoral students from a university or extramural institution. The aim of a GAMM early-career research group is to promote interdisciplinary cooperation in applied mathematics, mechanics and other disciplines represented in GAMM between master and doctoral students.
Before submitting an application, please contact the local GAMM representative. They will support the early-career research group in establishing and conducting activities (e.g. support in booking rooms, organizing the handling of finances, inviting guests). At the request of the early-career research group, the local GAMM representative may delegate this task to another person as long as they are a GAMM member. If there is no representative available, please contact the GAMM office directly.
A written application requesting the establishment of the group should be sent to the GAMM office. The application must include the names, email addresses and signatures of the persons applying for the GAMM membership, as well as their status (master student, doctoral student, etc.). It can be found on the GAMM homepage: Email. A first draft of the statute for the early-career research group (in accordance with the template) and a declaration of consent of the local GAMM representative must be attached. The local GAMM representative must ensure that the regular members involved are enrolled in a Diplom or master’s degree program, or are pursuing a doctorate there. The GAMM Executive Board decides on the applications for admission.
There shall only be one student group at each location. If several groups can be made at an institute, they should cooperate and be combined.

2. Membership in GAMM and in the Early-Career Research Group

All master students, doctoral students and postgraduates, who are interested in applied mathematics, mechanics and other disciplines represented in GAMM can become regular members of an early-career research group. All members of the early-career research group must be regular or student members of GAMM. For students and doctoral candidates in GAMM junior research groups the GAMM membership is free of charge. This can be applied for by the head of the early-career research group in writing.
When the doctorate has been completed, the membership in the GAMM early-career research group is no longer valid unless the statues of the early-career research group stipulate otherwise.

3. Financing

Upon application, the early-career research groups can receive a maximum support amount of 300€/year/early-career research group from GAMM. The early-career research groups my receive additional funding, e.g. through compulsory or optional registration fees for meetings or activities.  You can raise funds in other, legal ways, as long as this does not conflict with the GAMM statutes. When managing financial resources, the statutes for the GAMM early-career research groups must be taken into account. In particular, a treasurer must be appointed, who is responsible for the correct use of the funds.

4. Quality Assurance

The early-career research groups will be established with a three-year time limit and includes quality assurance. Each early-career research group is obliged to send a short annual report on the activities of the group to the local supervisor and the GAMM office. This report must be written in such a way that it can be used for publication in the GAMM newsletter. There is a review every three years. The early-career research group submits an evaluation report to the GAMM Executive Board via the local GAMM representative. The Executive Board decides on the continuation or dissolution of the early-career research group. If no evaluation report is submitted, the early-career research group will be dissolved.

5. Certificates of Recognition to the Commitment to the Early-Career Research Group

Upon proposal by the local supervisor, members of the early-career research groups will receive a certificate signed by the GAMM president in recognition of their commitment to the GAMM early-career research group. Only one person per early-career research group, per year, can be awarded. The proposal should be send to the GAMM office.

6. Previous SIAM Student Groups / Connections to Other Organizations

Previous SIAM student groups can be recognized as GAMM early-career research groups upon request, as long as the members fulfil the rules for membership in a GAMM early-career research group as formulated above. A corresponding application should be sent to the GAMM office.
A GAMM early-career research group can join another organization (e.g. SIAM) if this is approved by GAMM. A corresponding application should be sent to the GAMM office.
